“Designing our environment”
This motto summarises the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas objective: interpreting material culture and the ideas, values and attitudes associated with it –both past or present– to actively disseminate and contribute to creating a quality living environment from the perspective of social responsibility.

We want to build the museum around design, considered not as a professional speciality that emerged in the 20th century, but as a structural aspect of the social, cultural and productive system. It is an extended concept of design that we could call “design as a basic concept”, used to analyse past and present life and history.

Today, design is more than a methodology for creating consumer objects; it is creation and communication, the visual construction of human life. It is the functionality of knowledge. It is “designing our environment”.
